About Vidya Vox

Vidya Iyer, better known by her stage name, Vidya Vox, is an Indo-American singer who gained massive popularity and huge fan following in less than two years of having released her first mashup on her YouTube page ‘Vidya Vox’ in 2015.

Born in India and brought up in US, Vidya Vox took Carnatic Classical Music classes with her sister during their childhood and has learnt music from many gurus including Shri D.K. Natarajan. Though fond of music, Vidya never really thought of it as career until late.

It was only in college when she was doing her majors in Psychology from George Washington University preparing for medical school, that she found her inclination towards music.

There she met music composer Shankar Tucker and that was the turning point in her life. She became a vocalist for Shankar’s band and his YouTube Channel ‘The ShrutiBox’.

She soon moved to Mumbai for a couple of years to resume her music classes which she had quit as early as high school. It is evident that talent never dies though!

Once back in US, she released her first mashup cover on her own YouTube Channel ‘Vidya Vox’ in 2015. Since then there has been no looking back for her.

Her songs soon gained her popularity and in her short journey since 2015, Vidya Vox has received more than 200 million views and over 2+ million subscribers on YouTube.

Vidya Vox’s music and enthralling voice speaks for her and has got her attention of not just major publications world over but also the likes of Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Major Lazer and Diplo.

Also, in a short span of her career as a singer, Vidya has performed at prestigious venues located in various parts of the world like The White House, NCPA (National Centre for Performing Arts) and Webster Hall. She also performed at numerous festivals like MERU in Netherlands, Festivals Des Artes in Reunion Island & INK women.

Vidya Vox’s Mashups: Old Wine in New Bottle

What makes Vidya Vox tick is the fact while mashing up songs she never diverts from the mood and feel of the original and the added twist amps up the ecstasy.

Vidya Vox: A Global Desi

Vidya Iyer, an Indian-born American who immigrated to the US when she was young, had to struggle to find her identity because of the vast cultural difference between the two countries.

Trying to merge both her identities, of an Indian and an American, Vidya found a vent in music. She learnt Indian Classical Music as well as took American voice lessons and indeed demonstrates a wonderful command over both Indian and western music in her mashups.

Has it been a smooth ride for Vidya Vox all along?

In a conversation with Huffingtonpost, Vidya said, No! Like most of us, Vidya has had her set of blockades and bumps. Though she considers herself to be one of the fortunate ones to achieve success quickly, she definitely credits her hard-work and sleepless nights spent in preparation, for what she has achieved so far.
