Ali was born on 15th October 1986 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh and spent most of his childhood and later years with his grandparents and mother since his parents got separated when he was 18. His father worked for a firm in the middle east.

Ali hails from a very middle-class family and was brought up in a village near the Ganges. He did his schooling from La Martiniere in Lucknow and The Doon School in Dehradun. Ali used to be an excellent basketball player during his school days and also loved to be on stage be it for acting or debates. His interest for acting and theatre began when he was selected for the role of Trinculo for the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare.

Ali took up engineering because of his parent’s wish and later convinced them and changed his stream to Economics and graduated in Economics from St. Xavier’s, Mumbai.

Career and Movies

Ali Fazal began his acting career with a small role in a romantic comedy film: The other end of the line by James Dodson. In 2009, he appeared in American Television mini-series Bollywood Hero. While performing in his second year of college, Ali was picked for a lead erotic thriller Ek Tho Chance, which was premiered at the 14th International Film Festival in Kerela.

Lets talk about Ali Fazal’s Movies so far,Ali made his Bollywood debut in the year 2009 with 3 idiots, where he played the role of an engineering student Joy Lobo. His on-screen cameo is still remembered by the young mass. In the year 2011, Red Chillies Entertainment selected Ali for the lead role of the movie Always Kabhi Kabhi where he was seen on-screen as Sameer Khanna. However, Ali expressed in one of his interviews that doing that film was not the right decision. With reviews stacked up as a stereotype actor and with average acting skills, his choice of movies and small appearances didn’t appeal to the critics and audience.

His breakthrough happened in the year 2013 with the movie Fukrey. Ali portrayed the character of Zafar, a struggling musician. While Ali’s character received mixed responses from the critics, it was a major turning point in his career after which he started getting a lot of offers. Then after Ali went to be seen in the romantic comedy; Baat Ban Gayi, which was considered as a parody of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors.

Later he was seen opposite Vidya Balan in the film Bobby Jasoos, where his role as a popular local TV anchor was well received from both, audience and critics. Within the same year, Ali appeared opposite to Rhea Chakraborty for Sonali Cable. The movie went down the pole and received zero appreciation for Ali.

Later in the year 2015, Fazal played the role of an alcoholic novelist in the movie Khamoshiyan earing him accolades from the reviewers. This movie was well accepted by the audience and the songs had romantic vibes helping the the movie become more popular.

His Hollywood debut was with Furious 7 and even though it was for a very short span of time, it was well received by the fans. With all these major works in films, Ali has also graced the screens with his presence in a lot of short films and supporting roles. Mirzapur and Guddu Bhaiya

Ali Fazal rose to the stardom with his new name Guddu Pandit in the web series Mirzapur. His acting skills were supported with a thrilling plot that portrayed versions of his character, sometimes as a bodybuilder, another as a lover who has no idea of romancing and the killer avatar as Guddu Bhaiya, the gangster.

The actor worked on giving his character a distinct look and feel. When asked if it was a tough task, he said, “It has been quite a journey. It must have been challenging for all of us. I know it would be a surprise for many to see me in this role. But all thanks to Amazon and Excel for getting me on board. I am hungry for such challenges. And personally, I Iove working with accents. Mirzapur has a very relatability factor and as actors, we have also tried to keep it as real as possible. While many would assume it to be just a gangster series, it has no larger than life scenes and is very close to real life.”

With his Hollywood film getting acclaim from all quarters, in an interview, Ali was asked about whether Mirzapur will garner him with more appreciation and to this, he had replied “Totally! I think it was one of the reasons why I was so interested in this. I knew it’s going to latch on to a lot of people. Firstly, it’s really good quality and is really rooted. Anything local gets an instant connection with anyone. Because the local language and society are the same everywhere. There is an emotional connection”.

Other Achievements

Ali is a sporty person and loves playing Basketball. He is also a music lover and wishes to be a part of any music band to play the guitar.

Apart from acting, he has an affinity for charitable programmes and organisations. He performs stage shows to accumulate the funds for charities. In 2015, he joined Cancerthon organized by NDTV and Fortis. Ali also organised the drag race in Lonavala in the loving memory of Paul Walker and participated in the musical concert to raise funds for the Earthquake in Nepal.

In 2014, The Times of India, had him in the list of the ”Most Desirable Men”.

Ali is working on his next few films and looks forward to Tadka, where he will be seen as Siddharth. He is also working on the release of 2019; Prasthanam, shooting alongside Sanjay Dutt.
