His Struggle

Divyendu in an interview, said TOI, “Financially, during those years after coming to Mumbai, I would support myself doing small plays for corp-orates or doing one ad here and there.

We were four of us from FTII, sharing a two-room rented place in Goregaon. One of my friends was in editing and one from sound, so I would sometimes assist them to make little money.

There were, of course, some very bad days when you knew that you couldn’t spend more than a certain amount for a meal.

There was this small restaurant called Corner Darbar, where you could get mutton with four rotis at 32 rupees, so I settled onto a budget of 32 rupees per meal.

That’s what I needed to manage.

Divyendu a star in the making used to take up a lot of auditions but had to face rejection in his early days. His movie career began with a role that still keeps him fresh in our memory.

The Beginning of His Success

Divyendu was seen for the very first time in Indian Cinema in a side role for Aaja Nachle: Madhuri Dixit’s comeback. Though he wasn’t given any admiration for that role, his debut film, Pyaar Ka Punchnama, worked its charm on the audience where his role as Liquid was much appreciated.

Success wasn’t too far as he got another project to work upon in which he played the role of a poet Omi in David Dhawan’s remake of Chashme  Baddoor.

Establishing himself as an actor worth a million claps, Divyendu had offers lined up.

He went on to do more films including

Divyendu aka Munna Tripathi; Mirzapur

Divyendu was welcomed into all the smart phone and laptop screens with his portrayal of Munna Bhaiya in the Amazon Prime’s web series Mirzapur.

He is seen in a witty and mischievous role with a drastic leap of being a gangster’s son, Munna Tripathi.

After playing safe in the films of the similar genre, Divyendu saysAt this point, I could stick to what I was doing and dominate a genre or follow my heart and try different characters. I chose the latter.”

Divyendu plays a hot-headed gangster and a sinister in the series as described by its writer Karan Anshuman.

Talking about his role in Mirzapur, Divyendu says, ”Munna may be an in-your-face baddie, but he is so because of certain circumstances and situations, which humanises him.

He is a complex person. He is royal-born, with a silver spoon, but he wants a good relationship with his father.

To seek validation from him, he goes around doing violent things. It all comes from the vacuum inside him.

There are instances where people won’t be able to blame him. He is childlike in the way that he does not follow social norms. I would call him a pure but troubled soul.”

Mirzapur was the breakthrough that Divyendu looked for and with this, he is certain of heading a long way into the world or personifying characters.

Awards and Recognition

Divyendu was awarded the Screen Award for The Most Promising New Comer for his debut film Pyar Ka Punchnama.

Divyendu said in one of the recent interviews, “After a period of struggle between 2007 and 2009 came Pyaar Ka Punchnama, which got completed in 2010.

I was doing a lot of ads back then. One of them was Indian Panga League, a Virgin Mobiles ad in association with IPL.

I was playing a Sikh.

It was one of the earliest things that went viral on the internet in India. Because of that, I got a call for Pyaar Ka Punchnama.

Luv was shocked to see that I wasn’t a Sikh. But he liked my audition, and that’s how everything happened”.

The actor also received a lot of praise for ‘Batti Gul Meter Khali’.

Talking about the film Divyendu said, “I feel really humbled to receive such good reviews and audience love, which reassures, when an actor does the job with honesty and sincerity, they get rewarded”.

He believes that there is no secret recipe to the success of any role but staying true to the character and not thinking about any other dynamics does the part.
